Don’t just say your character eyes are blue try adding more descriptive colours such as cornflower blue – it adds more texture and helps the reader build a picture of them in their head.
Think about your characters names examples if you name one of your characters names is Anastasia – it means she will rise again so it will insinuate that your character is born feisty and brave.
Don’t overuse adverbs – it’s lazy writing.
Don’t mix up your tenses – I tend to do this a lot and thank goodness my editor has a lot of patience and will correct all the time I’m wrong.
Try and keep a writing journal you could write down things that inspire you such as; song lyrics or even something you see you when you’re out and about or something in a newspaper article or something in the story someone is telling you.
We’re going to write back to basics here; remember that your story has to have a beginning middle and end. It’s always nice to start your story off in the middle of an action so that way the momentum of the book and storyline gets going so it’s not too slow.
Set yourself writing limits don’t be silly; When it comes to writing my sensible limit is right 1500 words and no more. Otherwise I just start typing rubbish because I’m too tired.
Take inspiration from your favourite authors, for example when I’m writing a comedic story I tend to read Sophie Kinsella or Jenny Colgan.
Start your social media presence now. Join every writers group that you can on Facebook and on Twitter always look for the hashtagwritingcommunity and for people Who are doing the same as you and make friends because writing a novel is not easy on your own. (A computer class may help you grasp the basics if you’re more notepad and pen)
Make sure you plan a basic plot and stick to it but otherwise have fun and let your imagination run wild!
I bet you will wonder what made me write this book, am I right? Well I wrote this book because I missed lighthearted reading so I created something that I can enjoy the others could enjoy because sometimes some books get too heavy. It’s great that we can talk about a variety of subjects that weren’t necessarily being published 10 years ago or so but what happened to light fiction?
Also at the time of writing I didn’t have many friends so I’ve created a world and characters that made me feel safe. I was going to rough time with school but focusing on writing this book and escaping while writing gave me something else to focus on.
I don’t have grand illusions of it being a New York Times bestseller but I hope it provides some light-hearted escapism. Even if you read a chapter a night you go to bed with sweet dreams and don’t have to worry about tomorrow. This book let’s you recharge your batteries whilst reading.
I just enjoy telling stories and if they help people that an added bonus. I remember that this is my debut novel so it’s not going to be heavy, I need to establish myself as a writer first gain respect before I can produce anything groundbreaking.
My advice to my readers right now? Enjoy my light fiction stage because there be some heavy hitters coming your way in the future and then you’ll see my serious side.
As you all know I want to the hairdressers (before having to jumpstart my car) yesterday and I spent three hours getting my hair done and being pampered the only thing is it my back to be at the basins and to be in my wheelchair for so long. The result? I’m beautiful but, fuck me I hurt.
So today I haven’t even gotten dressed and basically did book promotion from my iPad in between naps and food. Does anyone not eat proper meals when flaring? All I want is seeded toast, bananas and green apple and yogurt,
Before you ask yes I will be taking it I will be taking a diazepam tomorrow to try and reset my body. I don’t even know if I’ll stay awake for Call The Midwife. In my chronic fatigue case I managed to spend £27 on kindle books. so at least I’ll have a lot of books to keep me occupied for a couple of days.
The proof copies of my book came for Carefree and Consequence, they look awesome. If you haven’t got your digital copy or paperback there is a link in my blog that will take you there. I always appreciate reviews however small.
I hope my fellow spoonies are okay?
Looking forward to setting up my author bank account for my royalties tomorrow I’m doing taxes with my grandparents. I want everything to be a bit bored so I’m saving every seat related to writing whether that be computer software or stationery. I was surprised at how much you can claim back on expenses.
PS I also applied for a flat in Talbot Green today.. wish me luck!
